Traffic cones, are fundamental tools for directing traffic, delineating hazards, and creating safe work zones.
1. Product Specifications:
Material:
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride): Most common, offering excellent durability, flexibility, UV resistance, and recyclability. Often uses recycled content.
Polyethylene (PE): Less common than PVC for standard cones, sometimes used for lightweight or low-cost options.
Height: Varies significantly based on application:
Mini: 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) - Pedestrian areas, indoor use.
Standard: 18-28 inches (45-70 cm) - Most common for lane closures, parking.
Tall: 28-36 inches (70-90 cm) - Higher visibility on highways, complex work zones.
Extra Tall/Jumbo: 36+ inches (90+ cm) - Maximum visibility for high-speed roads, major incidents.
Base:
Weighted: Solid rubber or heavy plastic base filled with ballast (often sand) for stability. Crucial for preventing tipping.
Stackable: Designed to nest inside each other for efficient storage and transport. Bases often have holes for water drainage.
Reflective Collar: A critical feature. A 4-6 inch (10-15 cm) white band encircling the cone near the top, made with retroreflective sheeting (meeting standards like ASTM D4956 Type III or IV) for high night-time visibility when illuminated by headlights.
Color: While Fluorescent Orange-Red is the most common and recognizable for general warnings,
UV Stabilization: Essential additive to prevent fading and brittleness caused by prolonged sun exposure.
Compliance: Must meet relevant standards like:
US: Federal Specification SS-4, MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) guidelines.
UK: BS EN 13422.
EU: EN 13422.
International: ISO 20752.
2. Common Types:
Standard Weighted Cone: The workhorse, with a solid, heavy base. (e.g., 18", 28", 36" heights).
Collapsible Cone: Features a concertinaed body that folds down over the base for ultra-compact storage. Ideal for emergency vehicles, quick deployments.
Traffic Cone with Reflective Collar: The standard configuration required for road use.
Rubber Cone: Made from recycled rubber, offering superior weight, durability, and wind resistance for permanent or long-term installations.
3. Manufacturing Process:
Material Preparation: PVC or PE resin pellets (often pre-colored with pigments and UV stabilizers) are measured.
Mold Loading: The precise amount of resin is loaded into a hollow, cone-shaped aluminum mold. The mold also includes cavities for forming the base and reflective collar lip.
Mold Sealing & Heating: The mold is securely closed and moved into a large oven. It rotates slowly on two axes (biaxial rotation).
Melting & Coating: As the mold rotates in the heat (typically 300-400°F / 150-200°C), the resin melts and evenly coats the entire inner surface of the mold cavity due to centrifugal force and gravity.
Cooling: The mold is moved into a cooling chamber (often with water spray or forced air) while still rotating. This solidifies the plastic into the shape of the cone and base.
Demolding: Once cooled, the mold is opened, and the solidified cone is removed. Excess plastic (flash) around the edges is trimmed.
Some cones are produced without base, A thick black rubber base is attached to the cone after moulding. Rubber base is produced by separate molding process for rubbers only.
Reflective Collar Application: Pre-cut strips of retroreflective sheeting are applied to the designated band near the top of the cone,
Quality Control & Packaging: Cones are inspected for defects (cracks, color consistency, collar adhesion, base integrity). They are then stacked (if stackable) and packaged for shipment.
